What are the specs of the theatre?

ASee web page. Lighting is general and we cannot give specifics until FEDA opens as lights are moved between the Nelson Mandela theatre and Lesedi regularly.

How much does an extra play cost ?

AFirst play R3500 and second R3000

How much time do we get to rehearse in the theatre?

AOne and a half hours.

Who will help us with lights? And Sound?

AThe Joburg theatre allow us the services of their expert technicians in lighting and sound who will train you up so you can operate the night of your show.

The theatre is absolutely out of bounds without Joburg theatre technicians or managers in the space. You may never use lighting or sound desk without them present!

Do we need a projector for images or films we use in our play?

Ait is recommended you bring your own computers and equipment if you need special effects. There is a screen at back of stage. At your tech you can check if your equipment is compliant with what the theatre offers.

Can we book a space in the theatre if one of our cast performs there ?

AYes but a max of two seats can be reserved per performance per school.

How strict is the time limit ?

AVERY strict after 30 min you will not be considered for finals.

What do we do if we rehearse at theatre early and cant get back to school?

AThere is a coffee shop with food and space to do homework etc.

How many schools make the finals?

AFour and a max of five

Can we leave set behind?

ANO. Take sets home at end of evening – unless it can be collected before 9:00 am the following day.Please organise with Anna at your rehearsal

Do we need a poster?

AYou can provide a poster if you want to. Schools must print their own and put them up in the foyer on the day of the performance of their play. It’s nice to advertise your play there.

How do we get tickets for finals?

AEach School will get one ticket BUT this must be confirmed by Saturday June 1 @12:00 midday.


If we don’t hear from the school the ticket will be reallocated or sold

What if our play touches on controversial and traumatic issues?

ASchools must provide FEDA with a trigger warning on the day of performance if we need to warn audience about sensitive content or flash/strobe lighting. Often we have younger brothers and sisters in the audience and parents must be given the option of leaving the theatre if necessary

Who has to be with students at the theatre during tech?

AStudents must ALWAYS be with an adult supervising at all times! Teachers are responsible for their students behaviour and safety.

What happens if I lose something at theatre?

ATake care of personal belongings. Neither FEDA nor Joburg theatre can be responsible for things that go missing.

What if we can’t perform on our scheduled date for any reason?

AFEDA cannot keep changing dates for schools once the schedule is up and booking opens. Schools must negotiate with other schools if they have a problem.
